HISTORY |
The founding of the library is connected with the arrival of the Jesuits in Zagreb. They established their residence there in 1606 and the first public grammar school in 1607. From its very beginning the library had a dual function: to modify its activities to the grammar school and to the Jesuits residence. After 1612, when the residence was upgraded to a college, the library was used by both the college and the gymnasium. After the dissolution of the Jesuit Order in 1773 the Library became a part of Academy of Science, which was set up in 1776 as a Faculty of Law, Philosophy and Theology. From 1816 the library received a legal deposit of materials printed in University of Budapest, and from 1837 it recieved a legal deposit of materials printed in Croatia and Slavonia. With the founding of Zagreb University in 1874 and the Academic Library becoming its constituent part, it contributed to the importance of the library as a scholary and national institution. The old building was built in 1913. Since 1918 the library has been receiving a legal deposit of printed materials from the whole of former Yugoslavia. After the Second World War in 1945, it became the Central Library of the Republic of Croatia. This function has underlined the national character of the library. After 1995, the library was moving to the new modern library building. The new building of the National and University Library is built on the plot of 3.75 hectares (with the possibility to spread to the South), in the part of town which is influenced by modern urban trends and develops into a representative centre of the town of the 21st century. The building can be reached from the park streching to the Aleja pomoraca and a number of faculties. Now, the building has an area of 36,500 square meters. It has ten floors, six of them designed for users. New headquarters and the application of new technology as well as the modern organization of space will meet users' needs to a higher degree than before. When the second phase of building the National and University Library is completed, the library will have an area of 44,500 square meters, because halls and auditoriums will be added to the already existing services. As a whole they will make a genuine national and cultural centre. |
